Gasa

Bhutan's least populated district — natural hot springs, dramatic peaks, and the trailhead for the high Himalayan treks.

Overview

Bhutan's least populated and most northerly district, Gasa is high, rugged, and largely wild — much of it falls inside Jigme Dorji National Park. It's best known for its natural hot springs (tshachu), believed to have healing properties, and as the starting point for some of the country's most demanding treks toward Laya and the Snowman Trek route.

Highlights

  • Gasa Tshachu, natural hot springs believed to have healing properties
  • Gasa Dzong, a remote fortress guarding the approach to the high north
  • The trailhead for treks toward Laya and the Snowman Trek
  • Semi-nomadic highlander communities and dramatic alpine scenery
  • Bhutan's lowest population density and some of its wildest terrain

Things to Do

  • Soak in the mineral-rich pools at Gasa Tshachu
  • Visit Gasa Dzong above the valley
  • Begin a multi-day trek toward Laya (for well-prepared trekkers)
  • Spot high-altitude wildlife inside Jigme Dorji National Park
